In 1923, Garrett Morgan was driving in Cleveland, Ohio, when he came to an intersection and saw a man on a horse-drawn carriage trying to get the attention of the police. The man was yelling and waving his arms, but the police were too busy directing traffic to notice him. Morgan got out of his car and helped the man get the police’s attention. The man was grateful, but Morgan was disturbed by how close he had come to being hit by a car. He realized that there needed to be a better way for drivers to know when to stop.

Morgan invented the traffic signal, which he patented in 1925. He sold the patent to the General Electric Company for $40,000. The traffic signal is now used all over the world.

Morgan was born in Kentucky in 1877. He moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, when he was a teenager. He worked as a newspaper delivery boy and then as a shoeshine boy before getting a job in a sewing machine factory. He taught himself how to fix sewing machines and eventually started his own repair business.
